The UN human rights office has revealed in a statement on Friday that its findings confirmed veteran Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli gunfire. This comes after various investigation conducted by media outlets, including CNN, and NGOs that revealed the same results over the course of the past six weeks.
‘All information we have gathered is consistent with the finding that the shots that killed Abu Akleh came from Israeli troops and not from indiscriminate firing by armed Palestinians,’ the UN human rights office confirmed on Friday. Moreover, the office “found no information suggesting that there was activity by armed Palestinians in the immediate vicinity of the journalists.”
Michelle Bachelet, the UN’s human rights chief, urges Israel to open an investigation into the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh. “It is deeply disturbing that Israeli authorities have not conducted a criminal investigation,” Ravina Shamdasani told a briefing in Geneva.
After six weeks of killing Abu Akleh and injuring her colleague Ali Al-Sammoudi, multiple investigations were conducted by media outlets, including CNN, Washington Post, and New York Times confirming the same findings that Abu Akleh was shot dead by Israeli troops, with no suggestion for activity by armed Palestinians.
51-year-old Palestinian-American Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank when an Israeli sniper fatally shot her in the head despite clearly wearing a press vest and helmet.
