The United Nations envoy for peace in the Middle East, Tor Wiensland, expressed his deep concern about the increasing violence of Israeli settlers and said that the “brutal” sequence of events in the town of Hawara, near Nablus, in the northern West Bank, is terrifying.”
Wensland’s remarks came during an open session of the UN Security Council held today, Wednesday, March 22, to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
The UN envoy called on the Israeli occupation government to stop settlement activities immediately, stressing that the settlements have no legal legitimacy and constitute a violation of international law.
Wensland said that settlements and the demolition of Palestinian homes are still continuing in the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem.
The UN envoy confirmed that the daily violence had increased significantly since the beginning of this year, noting that the Israeli occupation forces killed 82 Palestinians, including 17 children.
