Sewage and Trash Crisis in Gaza Spurs Health Catastrophe
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DaysofPal–The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has deepened, as mounting piles of trash and overflowing sewage in southern areas like Khan Younis and Rafah pose severe health risks to the displaced population.

Israel’s ongoing war has decimated waste management systems, leaving residents in life-threatening conditions.

In the overcrowded southern regions, particularly in the Mawasi area near Al-Aqsa University, thousands of tons of garbage now choke the streets. Floodwaters mixed with raw sewage have turned neighborhoods into breeding grounds for disease, with insects and rodents spreading illnesses that disproportionately endanger children and the elderly.

Human rights organizations have decried the “unspeakable” living conditions, warning of a looming health disaster.

The destruction of neighborhoods, combined with the lack of clean water, food, and medical supplies, has pushed Gaza’s population to the brink.

The situation has been exacerbated by the destruction of over two-thirds of Gaza’s water and sanitation facilities, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The war has left much of the region’s infrastructure either damaged or inoperable due to lack of fuel, power, and secure access for repairs.

OCHA has warned earlier in January that coping mechanisms are “heavily stretched,” forcing many to rely on contaminated water sources and inadequate hygiene supplies.

Residents are collecting water from unreliable locations and struggling to find basic items like soap, further compounding the crisis.

The number of displaced people in southern Gaza has surged to 1.5 million, worsening the already dire circumstances.

Streets filled with trash and sewage have become dangerous zones for residents trying to survive under relentless bombardment.

The international community continues to call for immediate humanitarian relief to address the unfolding disaster, but access to aid remains blocked by ongoing hostilities and logistical hurdles.
