The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs released a report on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, detailing the dire health condition of the 21-year-old Palestinian prisoner, Nazir Dar Ahmed, from the city of Ramallah.
This information was revealed after a visit by the committee’s lawyer, Yusuf Matiya, to him at the Ofer Prison.
Nazir Dar has been detained since May 8, 2022. He sustained 25 gunshot wounds during his arrest, distributed across his abdomen, intestines, and colon.
As a result, he suffers from severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloating, in addition to intense back pain that occasionally prevents him from standing or walking unless he is administered specific pain-relief injections.
Furthermore, two bullets are still lodged in his back, exerting pressure on his spinal cord.
The prisoner also complains of difficulty sleeping due to the excruciating pain throughout his entire body.
Despite his evident suffering and the need for proper medical care, the prison administration merely provides him with two painkiller pills or injections that lose their effectiveness after a few hours.
There is deliberate procrastination and negligence when it comes to his treatment, as he has not been taken to the hospital since March 2023. This is despite the urgency of his condition and the need for comprehensive medical attention.
Israel has adopted a policy of medical negligence against Palestinian prisoners and this has led to “slow killing” in Israeli prisons.
