Four more Palestinian prisoners from Gaza were killed in Israeli custody on Monday, December 30,2024, bringing the total number of prisoners killed within the past 24 hours to five.
This marks the deadliest period for Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons since 1967, according to prisoner advocacy groups.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs confirmed the deaths of Mohammad Rashid Al-Akka, 44, Samir Mahmoud Al-Kahlout, 52, Zuhair Omar Al-Sharif, 58, and Mohammad Anwar Lubbad, 57.
Their deaths follow that of Ashraf Mohammad Abu Warda, 51, who died on Sunday after being hospitalized.
Since the start of the ongoing war, 54 prisoners have been killed in Israeli custody, the highest number in history, according to prisoner organizations.
Advocacy groups have described the situation as an escalating humanitarian catastrophe and accused Israeli authorities of systematic neglect and abuse.
Mohammad Rashid Al-Akka has been arrested on November 15, 2023, while fleeing northern Gaza with his family, Al-Akka was a father of ten with no prior health issues. He died on Sunday in Negev Prison.
In addition, Samir Mahmoud Al-Kahlout was detained on October 25, 2024, from Kamal Adwan Hospital despite needing intensive care following surgery on his liver and kidneys. He died on November 3, 2024, a week after his arrest, leaving behind three children.
Meanwhile, Zuhair Omar Al-Sharif was abducted on October 7, 2023, while working in the occupied 1948 lands. The father of six had no known health conditions but died on October 18, 2023, in Ramle Prison.
Mohammad Anwar Lubbad was detained on November 18, 2024, while fleeing northern Gaza with his family. A father of eight suffering from liver disease and diabetes, he died on November 27, 2024.
The Commission and the Prisoners’ Club accused Israel of using systematic and deliberate measures to harm detainees, including medical neglect and inhumane treatment.
They warned that the death toll among prisoners is expected to rise as more than 10,300 Palestinians remain in Israeli custody, including 90 women, 345 children, and 3,428 administrative detainees.
Advocacy groups have also noted that hundreds of Gaza detainees remain forcibly disappeared in Israeli military prisons. This escalation of deaths has prompted renewed calls for international accountability, with prisoner organizations urging human rights bodies to take concrete action against what they describe as war crimes.
Since 1967, 291 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody, with 54 of those deaths occurring during the ongoing genocide, which has persisted for 451 days. Advocacy groups have called this period the deadliest chapter in the history of the Palestinian prisoner movement.
