DayofPal– The first phase of a high-stakes prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas has concluded, marking a significant moment in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
A total of 1,777 Palestinian detainees, who collectively spent nearly 10,000 years in Israeli detention, have been released in exchange for 33 Israeli prisoners held in Gaza.
The final batch of releases took place on Thursday, with Israel freeing 642 detainees, including 151 serving life sentences and 445 people taken from Gaza after October 7, 2023. Among them were 46 women and children from the besieged enclave.
The prisoner exchange unfolded over seven separate releases, with the freed detainees including members of various Palestinian factions: 300 from Hamas , 266 from Fatah, 62 from Islamic Jihad,18 from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and 1,147 unaffiliated people.
In total, 285 of those released were serving life sentences, and 1,046 had been detained in Gaza after October 7. The released prisoners also included 69 children, 71 women, and 41 elderly detainees.
Their original sentences had amounted to a staggering 35,000 years, with 25,000 years still remaining before their release.
The prisoner exchange took place in multiple stages, with key releases occurring over several weeks. On January 19, Israel freed 90 women and children from the West Bank and Jerusalem. This was followed by 200 detainees on January 25, including 121 serving life sentences and one Jordanian.
On January 30, 110 detainees were released, among them 32 serving life sentences and 30 women and children. In early February, another 183 detainees were freed, including 18 with life sentences. On February 8, 183 more were released, with 138 from Gaza. The largest single release occurred on February 15, when 369 detainees were freed, including 333 from Gaza and 36 serving life sentences.
In return, Palestinian factions in Gaza released 33 Israeli captives. Among them, 25 were freed alive, while 8 had been killed in Israeli airstrikes and were returned as bodies.
This exchange is part of a broader ceasefire agreement that took effect on January 19, 2025. The deal, brokered by Egypt and Qatar with support from the United States, is structured into three phases, each lasting 42 days. The completion of the first phase now opens negotiations for the second and third stages.
Meanwhile, the toll of the Israeli assaults remains devastating. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli attacks on Gaza have left more than 160,000 people killed or wounded, the majority of them women and children. Over 14,000 remain missing amid the widespread destruction.
