DaysofPal – The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office has reported that female detainees in Israel’s Damon prison are being subjected to repeated “brutal” violations, including being stripped of their hijabs and physically assaulted. These attacks occurred four times during December, leaving several prisoners injured.
The incidents are part of a serious and ongoing escalation against Palestinian female prisoners, which is a flagrant violation of international law and humanitarian norms, according to a statement issued by the Hamas-affiliated office.
The statement said that the inmates were brought against their will to the prison yard, forced to sit on the ground, had their hijabs taken off, were beaten, and faced stun grenades and dogs. The repeated assaults reportedly caused injuries to several detainees.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office held Israel fully responsible for the safety of the female prisoners, warning of the dangers posed by the continuation of such repressive measures.
The statement called on human rights and humanitarian organizations to act urgently to halt the escalating abuses against women in Damon prison.
In a related context, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights documented, in a report published last November, the ordeal of a female prisoner in Israeli occupation prisons. The report quoted her, after her release, as saying that she had been subjected to sexual violence on several occasions and photographed naked during her detention.
The Center’s report also revealed a “systematic and organized practice of sexual torture, including rape, forced nudity, forced photography, and sexual assault with objects and dogs,” perpetrated by members of the Israeli occupation forces.
Israel currently holds over 9,300 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, who, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights reports, suffer from torture, food deprivation, and medical neglect, with many fatalities resulting from these conditions.
Human rights advocates point out that violations against Palestinian prisoners have increased in tandem with Israel’s two-year genocidal campaign in Gaza, which has killed approximately 71,000 Palestinians and injured over 171,000 others, the vast majority of whom are women and children.
