A significant shift in the Palestinian political landscape has loomed out with indications that the recent war in the Gaza Strip has bolstered Hamas’ political standing.
The public opinion poll was conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Centre, in collaboration with the German NGO Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung, in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Due to security concerns, the poll did not include respondents from the Gaza enclave. However, the data also highlights a pronounced division among Palestinians regarding the preferred resolution to their national struggle, with substantial factions supporting either a two-state or a one-state solution.
The poll found out that about 40% of respondents believe the October 7 attack on southern occupied territories and the war that followed has served Palestinian national interests.
In addition, more than 41% of those polled said they expect that the current war to end in favour of Hamas. On the other hand, about 38.5% say the war will end with the advancement of normalization projects between ‘Israel’ and some Arab contries.
At least 44.5% of respondents said peaceful, diplomatic political action is the best method to achieve national goals, while 40.8 percent say they support violent military resistance, the poll revealed.
A survey Published last April 2024 by the Palestinian Center for Policy Survey and Research (PCPSR), in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), also approved the same results finding that more than 50 percent of Palestinians believe Hamas should govern the Gaza Strip after the current war.
59 percent of the respondents from Gaza and the occupied West Bank said they want Hamas to run post-war Gaza, while only 11 percent want the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to administer the enclave.
Another 13 percent said they hoped the PA would control the enclave only under the leadership of someone other than Abbas.
The two survey’s result intersected with ceasless loud protests in ‘Israel’ to fall Bengamin Netanyahu, who has been met with opposition by democratic party leaders on his leadership and being accused that “his collision no longer fits the needs of Israel.”
