A group of nearly 600 prominent Portuguese figures—including political leaders, academics, military officials, and top journalists—has signed a petition in solidarity with Palestine, urging immediate action against Israeli policies in Gaza.
Addressed to the Portuguese government and the United Nations, the petition strongly denounces Israel’s “genocide” and rejects U.S. proposals for the forced displacement of Gaza’s population.
The signatories demand that Portugal and the European Union take a decisive stand against any efforts to expel Palestinians and reaffirm their right to self-determination.
The petition also criticizes former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to seize control of Gaza, forcefully remove its nearly two million residents, and turn the besieged enclave into a so-called resort.
Palestinian Ambassador to Portugal, Rawan Sulaiman, welcomed the initiative, praising the signatories for their commitment to Palestinian rights and their opposition to genocide and annexation.
She emphasized that Portugal’s recognition of the State of Palestine would be a crucial step toward lasting peace, justice, and adherence to international law.
