Portuguese Parliament Recognizes 1948 Palestinian Nakba
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With a majority vote, the Portuguese parliament decided on Saturday, 22 July 2023 to recognize the Nakba that befell the Palestinian people in 1948 and to celebrate their struggle and secure their right to self-determination.

The resolution denounces the Israeli occupation policy of illegal expansion and annexation that violates international laws. The resolution further urges the Portuguese government to adopt a clear and assertive stance in defending the rights of the Palestinian people, as upheld by international conventions and laws.

The bill applauds the struggle of the Palestinian people for their right to self-determination. The Socialist Party, the Communist Party, and the Left Bloc coalition in the Portuguese Parliament all voted in favor, leading to a majority vote in favor of the bill.

The Palestinian ministry interprets this act by the Portuguese government as a pivotal step towards officially recognizing the State of Palestine.

Palestinians see the resolution as a display of Portugal’s solidarity with the Palestinian population who have been combating their struggles for the past 75 years.
