DaysofPal- The liberal Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported on Friday, 20 December 2024, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not attend events in Poland marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp.
The decision is reportedly linked to legal concerns surrounding an arrest warrant issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague over committing war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza by Israeli occupation forces.
The newspaper cited statements by Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Bartoszewski, who emphasized that Poland is committed to upholding the decisions of the International Court of Justice, making Netanyahu’s visit legally risky.
The main event, scheduled for January 27, is expected to draw widespread participation from world leaders, including King Charles III of England and several senior leaders from Western countries.
It is noteworthy that Poland is organizing an exceptional ceremony to commemorate the camp’s liberation this year, with the report highlighting that Russia is not among the invited countries.
In the same context, the Israeli occupation hosted a major event in 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of the camp’s liberation, attended by dozens of world leaders.
Netanyahu’s absence this year is particularly notable, raising questions about the impact of the International Court’s decisions on the mobility of Israeli officials.
On November 21, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, following a six-month investigation initiated by ICC prosecutor Karim Khan on charges of committing war crimes in Gaza by Israeli army against Palestinians, under supervision of Netanyahu.
The charges against Netanyahu and Galant include “incitement to genocide, using starvation as a method of warfare, obstructing humanitarian aid, and deliberately targeting civilians during the conflict.
The death toll from the Israeli genocide has risen to 45,129 martyrs and 107,338 injuries, since October 7, 2023, according to the daily report issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza on Thursday.
