In a recent report released by the Colonization & Wall Resistance Commission, it has come to light that during the month of August, Israeli occupation forces and settlers unleashed a harrowing wave of 851 attacks on Palestinian citizens and their properties. These violent aggressions included direct assaults on innocent civilians, wanton vandalism, rampant land bulldozing, audacious village incursions, heartrending tree uprooting, and unjust property seizures, underscoring a stark increase in hostilities in the region.
Concentration of Violations
Muayad Shaaban, the resolute head of the Colonization & Wall Resistance Commission, unequivocally stated that the violations were overwhelmingly concentrated in three Palestinian governorates. Jerusalem governorate bore the brunt with a staggering 148 attacks, closely followed by Nablus governorate, where 140 assaults were recorded, and Hebron governorate, registering 113 attacks. These figures unambiguously depict the grim reality faced by Palestinians living under the yoke of occupation.
Settler Responsibility
Alarming to note, the report brings to light that Jewish settlers were directly responsible for 142 of these violent transgressions. These included brazenly organized and perilous incursions into various Palestinian areas, such as Wadi al-Sik, east of Ramallah, and the communities of Burin and Qaryut in the Nablus governorate, as well as concentrated attacks in the Hebron governorate, particularly in Masafer Yatta. These attacks have further inflamed an already explosive situation, casting a dark shadow over the prospects of peace.
Demolitions and Notices
In an affront to humanity, the Israeli occupation forces executed 36 demolitions during August, leaving 51 homes and commercial establishments in ruins. The devastation was especially severe in the governorates of Hebron, Jerusalem, and Ramallah, rendering numerous Palestinian families homeless and destitute.
Adding to the misery, the report reveals that Israeli occupation authorities issued a staggering 106 demolition notices during August, posing an imminent threat of major demolitions in the near future. Most of these menacing notifications were targeted at the governorates of Jericho, with 23 dire notices, and the Nablus and Jerusalem governorates, both suffering under 22 ominous notifications each, along with 15 distressing notifications in Salfit.
Empowering Settlement Division
Further compounding the Palestinian plight, the Israeli government took an alarming step, granting unparalleled land use allocation powers to the Settlement Division. This move empowers the division to oversee and expand illegal settlement outposts on Palestinian lands, notably at the “Amihai” outpost straddling the Ramallah and Nablus governorates and “Mevo’ot Yericho” in the Jericho governorate.
The report meticulously documents the callous uprooting of 260 trees, with a majority, a staggering 110, falling victim in the Hebron governorate. An additional 70 trees met a similar fate in the Bethlehem governorate. These actions bear grave environmental and economic consequences for the affected Palestinian communities.
Settlement Expansion
In a deeply troubling development, Israeli occupation authorities greenlit the construction of 98 new settlement units in “Giv’at Ze’ev,” a settlement situated northwest of Jerusalem. Furthermore, a disconcerting 588 dunums of Palestinian land across various regions were forcefully seized during the tumultuous month of August, deepening the land crisis that Palestinians endure.
The findings of this report shed a glaring light on the pressing need for international attention and concerted action to address the intensifying crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories. The surging tide of Israeli attacks, demolitions, and land seizures further underscores the urgency of reaching a just resolution to the Palestinian struggle under the Israeli occupation.
