The Palestinian Prisoners Committee of National and Islamic Forces in Gaza organized a vigil in solidarity with the sick Palestinian detainee Walid Daqqa, Sunday, June 4, 2023.
Many Palestinian officials, human rights organizations, and detainees’ families reportedly participated in a vagile in front of the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, calling for the immediate release of the cancer-patient detainee Daqqa.
They stressed that the Palestinian detainees inside Israeli occupation prisons are the core of the Palestinian issue and their issue is the responsibility of every Palestinian.
The participants called on the international community to act urgently, stop Israeli crimes against Palestinian detainees, and pressure it to release them all as it’s their legal human right guaranteed by international law.
Daqqa was diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow cancer several months ago and has been suffering successive health setbacks.
Earlier, after diagnosing him, the Israeli prison administration’s medical department stated that “his days are numbered and there is an immediate risk to his life”.
Daqqa’s deteriorated health has put a strain on his family, driving them to apply a request to the Israeli court for early parole.
The Israeli Early Release Authority refused to release the detainee Daqqa, who has been detained since 1986, saying that it is not within its jurisdiction and will refer it to the Supreme Committee.
Like other Palestinian detainees, Daqqa, who was previously diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, has suffered from medical negligence during his 37 years in prison, which has worsened his health.
The number of sick Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons has increased to 750, including patients with chronic and serious diseases and 26 cancer patients, according to Wa’ed Association for Detainees and Ex-detainees.
