Christian Christmas celebrations began, since Thursday morning in Bethlehem in the south of the West Bank, for the sects that follow the Western calendar, amid strict measures imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Prayers were held in the Church of the Nativity, and scout teams organized performances around the city streets, amid a large security presence.
"This year, we celebrate birthdays in accordance with a health protocol, to overcome the coronavirus, and the activities are limited to a limited number of clerics only," Bethlehem Mayor Antoun Salman said.
Salman added, "Despite the epidemic, Bethlehem sends a message of peace to the world."
Celebrations for Christian denominations that depend on the Eastern calendar are held on January 7.
