Days of Palestine Report –Israeli Opposition Leader MK Issac Herzog called for resumption of peace talks during a meeting with Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday.
During the first meeting between a senior Israeli official and the PA leader since the 51-day Israeli war on Gaza, Herzog signaled that the intermediary cease-fire in place was a rare opportunity to bring both sides back to the negotiating table.
The chairman of the Israeli Labour Party said that in order to reach a peace deal, Abbas and the PA should control Gaza and accept responsibility of the coastal enclave.
He also urged the PA leader to refrain from carrying out unilateral steps that “could harm the chances of reaching an arrangement,” referring to Abbas’ vocal threats to join international bodies should the Israeli occupation did not meet his demands regarding the resumption of peace talks.
In response, Abbas stressed that peace negotiations between the Israeli occupation and the Palestinians needed to be based on determining the borders of a future Palestinian state as part of an agreement.
