DayofPal– United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated on Friday that the UN will continue its steadfast support for the Palestinian people in their struggle for their inalienable rights to live in peace, security, and dignity. He also noted that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is worsening on a daily basis.
He made the remarks on the occasion of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which has been observed annually on November 29 since it was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1977.
Marking the day, UNRWA also said that Gaza has been experiencing the most intense bombardment of a civilian population since World War II.
UNRWA posted on X that the plight of the Palestinian refugees remains the longest unresolved refugee crisis in the world amidst harsh conditions of internal displacement that Gaza population has been enduring since the start of the current war.
Guterres added that after more than a year of escalation, the Gaza Strip has been in complete devastation, and the humanitarian situation is deteriorating in a horrific way, emphasizing that this situation can in no way be justified.
He also pointed out that Israeli military operations in the West Bank and the ongoing settlement expansion are exacerbating the suffering of Palestinians, stressing that the international community must act urgently to halt these illegal practices and end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands.
Guterres called for the revival of efforts to achieve a two-state solution in line with relevant UN resolutions, and emphasized that efforts must be harnessed to achieve lasting peace in the region.
Guterres concluded his remarks by asserting that nothing can justify the collective punishment being endured by the Palestinian people, in light of the ongoing Israeli violations of international law and human rights.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has also called on the international community to join together and use its collective strength to demand Israel end the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, and also bring those guilty of genocide in Gaza to justice.
Commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Muizzu said the struggle of the Palestinian people is also the struggle of “every Maldivian”.
“We call on the international community to come together and leverage all its political will and economic power to demand an immediate end to Israel’s illegal occupation and hold those responsible for war crimes and genocidal acts accountable,” he said on social media.
