Days of Palestine – Amman

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry considered Monday the Israeli practices in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem perpetuate the occupation and undermine the chances of achieving a just and comprehensive peace.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs condemns the provocative and escalatory practices carried out by the settlers in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem,” the ministry’s spokesman, Haitham Abu al-Ful, said in a statement.

He added: “The eviction and displacement orders for the residents of Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem are in violation of international humanitarian law.”

Abu al-Ful stressed that “Israel, as the occupying power in East Jerusalem, is obligated according to international law to protect the rights of Palestinians in their homes.”

He continued, “The continuation of unilateral Israeli practices of confiscating Palestinian lands, demolishing homes, and deporting Palestinians from their homes, are illegal practices that perpetuate the occupation and undermine the chances of achieving a just and comprehensive peace.”

Yesterday, Sunday, the number of Palestinians injured as a result of the repressive practices of the Israeli forces in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood reached 31, in addition to 12 cases of arrest, according to a previous statement of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Tensions began in the neighborhood yesterday after the extremist Israeli Knesset member Itamar Ben Gvir set up a tent on Palestinian land inside the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that dozens of settlers stormed the neighborhood, accompanied by Ben Gvir, a member of the Knesset (parliament), in an attempt to evict the Salem family from their home they have resided in since before 1948.

The Israeli occupation had warned the Salem family to evict their home next March, while the family asserted that the ownership of the house belongs to them and that the intention to evict them from it is illegal.
