DayofPal— Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz retracted his earlier statement suggesting that Israel would establish settlements in Gaza, following criticism that it contradicted the US-led peace plan for the region.
Speaking at a West Bank settlement, Katz said, “Israel will establish pioneer groups in northern Gaza in place of the settlements that were evacuated,” adding that it would happen “at the appropriate time.”
The comments circulated widely on social media and drew sharp criticism.
Hours later, Katz’s office clarified that the remark was made in a “security context,” emphasizing that Israel has no intention of establishing settlements in the Gaza Strip.
His statement conflicted with US President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire plan and Netanyahu’s repeated assurances against occupying Gaza.
Meanwhile, repeated attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank continues. Palestinian officials reported that overnight on Tuesday, settlers attacked a home in As Samu’, near Hebron, smashing doors and windows, firing tear gas, and injuring three children. Several sheep were also killed or injured.
CCTV footage shows five masked settlers carrying out the attack, with police confirming arrests on charges including trespassing and property damage.
According to the UN, settler attacks often increase during the olive harvest, a crucial period for Palestinian livelihoods.
The West Bank is home to roughly 3 million Palestinians, but over half a million settlers from world countries invaded the land following Israel’s residency invitations.
The international community regards settlements as illegal under international law, a position Israel disputes.
