Israeli occupation compelled Sunday, July 16, 2023, Ahmed Mustafa Qaraeen, a resident of Wadi Hilweh neighborhood in the town of Silwan, south of occupied Jerusalem, to self-demolish his house.
The Israeli occupation court in Jerusalem had previously issued a ruling ordering Qaraeen to evacuate his house and demolish it at his own expense, or face the costs of demolition by the occupation authorities, under the pretext building with permit.
Silwan, located just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, has been a focal point of Israeli settlement expansion and home demolitions.
The Israeli occupation’s demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank is considered illegal under international law, as it violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the destruction of private property in occupied territories.
