The European Union (EU) said that Israeli occupation settlement expansion, demolitions, and displacement of Palestinian people are illegal under international law.
On 4 May 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court issued its ruling to demolish eight small villages in Masafer Yatta, located in the farthest south of Hebron province in the occupied West Bank, displacing over 1,300 Palestinians living in the area,
The court’s move, which is considered one of the largest expulsions carried out by the Israeli occupation in recent decades, leads to the confiscation of over 35,000 dunam of land to consolidate colonial settlement construction in the region.
The area has been subjected to repeated Israeli occupation violations by settlers and soldiers targeting their main source of living – livestock. These violations include the demolition of animal barns, homes, and residential structures.
In a statement issued by the EU spokesperson, the EU condemned such possible plans and urged the Israeli occupation to halt demolitions and displacement, in line with its obligations under international humanitarian and international human rights law.
“The establishment of a firing zone cannot be considered an “imperative military reason” to transfer the population under occupation,” said the statement.
The EU pointed out that Israeli occupation demolitions, displacement, and forced transfers threaten the two-state solution and will only escalate an already tense environment from which no one can truly benefit and which only further deteriorates the situation on the ground.
