After demolishing three Palestinian schools across the occupied West Bank since the beginning of 2023, the Israeli occupation threatens to demolish 53 more in Area C, the Palestinian Ministry of Education stated Saturday, August 19, 2023.
More than one thousand students may be deprived of their right to education and may suffer an attainment gap as the school year begins tomorrow.
Sadi Al-Khadour, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Education, said that the Israeli occupation sent demolition threats to schools in Masafer Yatta, a collection of 19 Palestinian hamlets, spreading panic among teachers, principals, and, most importantly, students who are heading towards an unknown future.
Mo’ayyad Sha’ban, the head of the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, stressed that the ongoing ‘Israeli’ attacks on Palestinian schools are a flagrant violation of international law and human rights laws.
One of the Israeli occupation’s reoccurring measures is violating the Palestinians’ right to education. According to the UN Commission on Human Rights Special Rapporteur on the right to education, “military occupations are another appreciable curb on the human right to education, the most egregious example being the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” (UN Doc. E/CN.4 17 Dec. 2004, paragraph 124). [Stressing it is more of an occupation than a conflict].
