Israeli Occupation Court extended on Wednesday, 30 August 2023 the illegal detention of a hunger striker detainee in Israeli jails until next Tuesday for the second time.
The Palestinian Prisoners Club stated in a statement that the Israeli occupation court extended the detention of the 52-year-old Palestinain detainee Maher al-Akhras who has been on hunger strike for eight days until next Tuesday.
It is noteworthy that the Israeli occupation re-arrested the Palestinain detainee Al-Akhras on 23 August 2023. Al-Akhras declared his hunger strike from the moment of his arrest.
Al-Akhras, a father of six children, is a former detainee who spent five years in the Israeli jails, the last of which was in 2020. During his detention, he went on an open hunger strike for 103 days in protest of his administrative detention without a charge of trial.
Palestinian detainees have constantly resorted to hunger strikes as a method to oppose the Israeli violations against them, demanding an end to these illegal policies that violate international law and Human rights accords.
Nine Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails have been on open-ended hunger strikes identified as Kayed Fasfous, Sultan Khalouf, Osama Daqrouq, Hadi Nazzal, Mohammad Zakarneh, Anas Kmail, Abdelrahman Baraka, Mohammad Ikhmis, and Zuhdi Abdo in protest of their administrative detention without a charge or trial.
The Israeli occupation has escalated its administrative detention policy against Palestinians as the number of administrative detainees currently exceeds 760, including minors, women, and the elderly, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Society.
The Society added that 80 percent of the administrative detainees are former prisoners who spent years in the prisons most were administrative detentions.
Since 2023, the Israeli occupation has issued about 1978 administrative detention warrants until the end of last July, according to the data of the Prisoners’ Club.
Israel’s illegal policy of administrative detention is a pre-emptive measure that allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for lengthy periods of time based on disclosed allegations that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.
