Israeli naval vessels on Saturday, September 23, 2023, pursued and targeted Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza.
Zakaria Bakr, a spokesperson for the Fishermen’s Committees Union, reported that Israeli naval forces used water cannons to inundate fishing boats fishing in the waters off the Sudania area, west of Beit Lahia.
Bakr explained that using water cannons to douse fishing boats could damage the boats and disrupt the on-board equipment.
In the context of these recent events, Bakr noted that Israeli naval forces have committed 40 violations against fishermen from the beginning of September until the 23rd of the same month.
These violations have resulted in the injury of five fishermen, one of whom sustained severe injuries.
Additionally, two fishermen were arrested, three fishing boats were destroyed, and another boat was confiscated.
The violations against Palestinian fishermen encompass various forms of aggression, including the use of firearms such as rifles and rubber bullets, water cannons, and guided missiles.
There have also been incidents involving the deployment of industrial cranes to seize control of small fishing vessels.
These actions by Israeli naval forces pose significant threats to the livelihoods and safety of Gaza’s fishermen.
