DaysofPal- The Israeli government is expected to approve a plan during its weekly meeting next Sunday to establish military and security facilities on the site of a former United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) compound in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem.
According to the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli project includes the construction of a military museum, a recruitment office, and a headquarters for the defense minister near Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem.
The report stated that the proposed decision would instruct the Israel Land Authority to allocate approximately 36 dunams of land to the Ministry of Defense without public tenders, in a clear violation of the site’s legal status as property belonging to a United Nations agency protected by international immunity.
Israeli occupation had previously demolished the compound in January under the supervision of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, before confiscating the land for the Israel Land Authority.
The site is considered United Nations property and is protected under international conventions on privileges and immunities, which prohibit any executive, judicial, or legislative actions against it. The International Court of Justice has previously affirmed such protections.
The location lies near Ammunition Hill, a site originally established by British Mandate authorities as an ammunition depot for a police school, and later turned by Israeli occupation into a memorial for the June 1967 war battles.
