Israel Exploits Regional Turmoil to Shift Status Quo at Aqsa

Jerusalem: 23 settlers raids into Aqsa Mosque in October

DaysofPal- Amid escalating regional tensions and ongoing conflicts across the Middle East, analysts say Israel is intensifying efforts to impose a new reality at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, raising concerns over potentially far-reaching consequences.

Recent weeks have seen a marked increase in incursions by Israeli settlers into the Al-Aqsa compound, conducted under heavy police protection.

Observers note that these actions appear to go beyond isolated incidents, reflecting a coordinated strategy aimed at gradually reshaping the longstanding status quo at one of Islam’s holiest sites.

According to Jerusalem affairs expert Hassan Khater, the developments signal a broader project rather than routine security activity.

“What is happening at Al-Aqsa is no longer a series of ordinary incursions,” Khater said.

“It is part of an integrated plan aimed at altering the identity of the site and imposing full Israeli sovereignty over it in a gradual and calculated manner,” he added.

He added that the increasing frequency and changing nature of these incursions, including the growing presence of overt Jewish religious rituals, indicate attempts to establish both temporal and spatial divisions within the compound.

Khater warned that the ultimate objective is to “break the psychological and political barrier” and redefine Al-Aqsa in international perception as a space open to division, rather than an exclusively Islamic holy site.

He also pointed to a decline in Arab and Islamic responses, alongside broader regional distractions, as factors enabling these developments with limited political cost.

Despite mounting restrictions and security measures, Khater emphasized that Palestinian residents of Jerusalem remain “the first line of defense,” continuing to resist through sustained presence, religious observance, and popular mobilization.

He called for unified Palestinian political and grassroots action, arguing that internal divisions weaken the ability to confront the evolving strategy on the ground.

Khater also urged Arab states to move beyond statements of condemnation toward concrete diplomatic and economic measures.

Separately, Israeli affairs analyst Wadie Abu Nassar linked the developments at Al-Aqsa to the broader regional context.

“These incursions cannot be separated from the wider regional situation,” Abu Nassar said. “Israel is attempting to take advantage of international and regional preoccupation with multiple crises to advance sensitive policies in Jerusalem.”

He noted that the current Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, relies heavily on support from far-right and religious factions that place the Al-Aqsa issue at the center of their political agenda.

Abu Nassar highlighted the role of Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister, accusing him of actively encouraging the incursions and promoting what he describes as “freedom of worship for Jews” at the site, a position critics say represents a fundamental shift in longstanding arrangements.

“Ben-Gvir is explicit about his goals,” Abu Nassar said. “With backing from within the government, these policies become more dangerous and more likely to advance.”

He warned that Israel appears to be pursuing a phased approach: intensifying incursions, introducing religious practices, and ultimately moving toward a functional division of the site.

While these steps are implemented gradually to avoid major backlash, he said, their cumulative effect could amount to a strategic transformation.

Analysts caution that continued regional instability and limited international attention may provide Israel with a wider margin to act without significant pressure.

“If there is no serious response at the Palestinian, Arab, and international levels,” Abu Nassar concluded, “Israel will likely continue on this path until a new reality is firmly established, one that will be difficult to reverse.”
