DayofPal— The Israeli military is reportedly setting up a permanent base in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, marking the first such facility established in an area designated as being under full Palestinian control since the signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords, according to Haaretz.
The new base, according to the military, is “intended to replace the presence of forces in residents’ homes [in the Jenin refugee camp], and to regulate troop deployment in the area from a long-term perspective, as part of creating the operational conditions for a safe withdrawal from the refugee camp,” Haaretz reported.
The report said the base would be located near the Jenin refugee camp, where Israeli forces have conducted repeated attacks and raids since early 2025 that displaced thousands of residents and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
Sources cited by Haaretz said the base is also likely intended to support the military operations and protect nearby Israeli settlements in the area.
Area A in the occupied West Bank is under full Palestinian Authority’s civil and security control, since the Oslo Accords were signed.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in the northern West Bank’s Jenin, Tulkarm and Nur al-Shams refugee camps, for over a year, as part of Israel’s assault, “Iron Wall.”
Human rights groups have called the assault “the largest wave of displacement in the West Bank since 1967.”
As part of the assault, many homes in the camps were also demolished. According to UN data submitted as part of the petition, more than 33,000 Palestinians are still displaced from their homes.
Recently, Israel has been promoting the establishment of settlements in the northern West Bank. In December and March, ministers decided to re-establish settlements that were evacuated under the disengagement plan.
Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Israel’s ongoing assault is designed to “change the security situation” in the occupied West Bank.
Since 1967, Israel has maintained a military occupation of the West Bank, involving arrests, checkpoints, home invasions, demolitions, daily and assaults.
Additionally, about 700,000 Israelis live in illegal settlements on Palestinian land. More on Israeli settlers later.
