DaysofPal – Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that it has begun construction work to build a barrier along the border with Jordan, starting from the Jordan Valley region.
The ministry stated that the construction of the wall along the Jordanian border will take place in two segments and will extend for about 500 kilometers, running from the southern part of the Golan Heights to the northern outskirts of Eilat.
According to the announcement, the first phase will involve building two sections of the wall, each 80 kilometers long, in the northeastern portion of the border between Israel and Jordan.
The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported that the cost of the project—described as a multi-layered barrier, is estimated at around 5.5 billion shekels.
In parallel with the construction work, the Ministry of Defense continues to plan the additional segments that are expected to be built later, in line with what it described as “the security concept for the border and the tools required to achieve it.”
The ministry said that various bodies are participating in the construction process, including the “Border and Seam Directorate,” the Engineering and Construction Division of the Defense Ministry, and the Central Command of the Israeli army.
It added that “the project to strengthen national security and tighten strategic control over the eastern border is a fundamental part of the Ministry of Defense’s strategy and the policies led by the ministry’s Director General, Reserve Major General Amir Baram.”
The border with Jordan is Israel’s longest land border, totaling 335 kilometers, including 97 kilometers shared with the West Bank.
On May 18, Channel 12 reported that the Israeli Security Cabinet approved the construction of what it called a “security wall” along the border with Jordan.
The channel said the decision came after what it described as two “infiltration incidents,” during which foreign nationals were reportedly able to enter Israel without being detected by authorities.
