Days of Palestine – Jerusalem
The Higher Committee of Churches Affairs in Palestine condemned Tuesday the attack by extremist Israeli settlers on the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Greek Garden of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate on Mount Zion in occupied Jerusalem.
The committee said in a statement, that the repeated attacks on the site and the church, the repeated incursions and tampering with the contents of the church, the exhumation of the graves of the dead, and the dumping of garbage in the church garden, in addition to the death threats against the security guard, are nothing but a continuation of the Israeli approach to restricting churches in Jerusalem and the seizure of its property.
They added that attacks on Islamic and Christian places of worship have become systematic and organized, which is clearly represented in the daily invades by extremists into the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, in order to achieve Israeli ambitions to control the holy city and empty it of its original inhabitants.
The committee pointed to the failure of the Israeli occupation authorities to arrest and prosecute extremists known to the Israeli police.
They stated that the complicity of the occupation authorities and the protection of settlers leads to an escalation of attacks on Islamic and Christian sanctities and the violation of their sanctity, which is a green light for the settlers to continue their orgy.
The President of the Committee, Ramzi Khoury, a member of the Executive Committee of the Liberation Organization, called on all media outlets to expose these racist occupation practices.
He called on the Palestinian people, especially the Jerusalemites, to unite and confront the attacks on churches and their properties, as well as the repeated incursions into the courtyards of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Khoury appealed to the international community to break its silence and assume its responsibility to provide protection for the Palestinian people, protect their right to practice their religious rites without restrictions, and stop all forms of violations against the holy sites.
