DaysofPal- Hamas has rejected a ceasefire proposal that would have resulted in a 30-day halt in hostilities and the release of a few Israeli prisoners of war, but it would include complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
“Hamas rejects any proposal for a temporary halt to more than a year of fighting in Gaza and insists on a lasting ceasefire,” a senior Hamas official said Thursday.
“We have already expressed our opposition to the idea of a temporary pause in the war, followed by a return to aggression.
Taher al-Nunu, a senior leader of Hamas, stated that the Movement supports a permanent, not temporary, end to the war.
According to sources close to the Hamas Movement, they have officially rejected the proposal put forth by the US, Qatar, and Egypt—who have been serving as mediators between Israel and Hamas for months—despite assertions in Israeli media that it was still being considered.
Around 240 Palestinian detainees were released in exchange for approximately 100 Israeli captives in November as part of a prisoner swap agreement.
A 30-day ceasefire and an undetermined number of Palestinian detainees would have been exchanged for the release of 11 to 14 Israelis, including women and the elderly, in the first phase of the new proposed agreement.
American officials involved in the negotiations told Israeli news outlet Maariv that they hoped for a ceasefire agreement before the US election on November 5th, even though the current proposals appear to be non-starters.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation army has been conducting a devastating genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring over 144,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. Massive destruction and famine have killed dozens of children and the elderly, and over 10,000 people are still missing.
