DaysofPal- Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said on Monday that the death of Palestinian prisoner Imad Rajeh Sarhan in Israeli detention highlights the Israeli violations against Palestinian detainees.
In remarks to local media, Qassem stressed that the issue of Palestinian prisoners must remain at the forefront of both national and international attention amid growing reports of abuse inside Israeli prisons.
He stated that detainees are facing an unprecedented phase of torture, mistreatment, and medical neglect, adding that conditions inside the prisons amount to serious violations of humanitarian laws and norms.
Qassem said the death of Sarhan reflects the broader suffering experienced by prisoners, many of whom are in deteriorating health.
He also pointed to the case of Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, who he said is enduring ongoing medical neglect and abuse despite his humanitarian status.
The Hamas spokesperson called on international and human rights organizations to take urgent and effective action to end the systematic Israeli torture and medical negligence and to hold the Israeli occupation accountable for its treatment of Palestinian prisoners.
With Sarhan’s death, the number of prisoners who have died in custody since the beginning of the war in Gaza has risen to 90, according to figures cited by prisoner advocacy groups. Sarhan was among 118 prisoners serving life sentences.
Data from Palestinian prisoner organizations indicate that the total number of Palestinians currently held in Israeli prisons exceeds 9,400, including hundreds who are ill, serving long-term sentences, or being held under administrative detention.
According to these groups, approximately 327 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody since 1967, underscoring longstanding concerns about detention conditions and prisoner welfare.
