DaysofPal – Hamas has confirmed the killing of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, a senior commander in the movement’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, following an Israeli strike on Gaza City.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Hamas condemned the “treacherous and cowardly assassination” of al-Haddad, accusing Israel of continuing attacks that violate the Gaza ceasefire agreement and target civilians across the enclave.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Friday that Israeli occupation forces had targeted and killed al-Haddad, whom they described as “one of the architects” of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
According to Hamas, al-Haddad was killed on Friday evening alongside his wife, daughter, and several Palestinian civilians during Israeli strikes on the Remal neighborhood west of Gaza City.
Medical sources said three Palestinians were killed when an Israeli strike hit a civilian vehicle, while four others died after another strike targeted a residential building in the same area. Sources also told Al Jazeera that three women and an infant were among the victims. Dozens of others were reportedly wounded.
Hamas said the killing of al-Haddad represented the latest Israeli breach of the ceasefire arrangement that came into effect in October last year, adding that the attacks reflected Israel’s “ongoing aggression against innocent civilians” in Gaza.
The movement stated that such operations reveal the “criminal and fascist nature” of Israel, accusing it of disregarding international laws and conventions while attempting to impose political and military realities through force.
The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement and its armed wing, the Mujahideen Brigades, also mourned al-Haddad in a joint statement praising his role in the Palestinian resistance.
“We commend his immense sacrifices and long struggle, and we recall his rich history of resistance against the Zionist enemy, fighting it until he was martyred,” the statement said, adding that the assassination would not weaken the resolve of armed resistance groups in Gaza.
The killing comes months after Israel assassinated senior Hamas commander Raed Saad in December. Saad, who served as al-Haddad’s deputy, was killed in a strike that also wounded at least 25 people.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks since the start of the ceasefire in October 2025 have killed at least 870 Palestinians and wounded 2,543 others.
