DaysofPal- In the heartbreaking aftermath of her son’s death, a Palestinian mother from the Gaza Strip has accused Israeli occupation forces (IOF) of torturing her son, Raafat Adnan Abdel Aziz Abu Funouneh, to death while he was detained in an Israeli prison.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, where Raafat’s family awaits not only his body but answers about how their healthy and vibrant son met such a fate.
A Shocking Turn of Events
Raafat Abu Funouneh, a 36-year-old father of one, was arrested by Israeli forces on October 7, 2023, during what Palestinians describe as the “war of extermination” launched by Israeli occupation against Gaza.
According to his mother, who spoke to the Anadolu Agency, Raafat was in perfect health at the time of his arrest, weighing over 95 kilograms and free from any chronic illnesses. His family had been eagerly anticipating his release as part of the eighth batch of prisoner exchanges outlined in the ceasefire agreement between Palestinian factions and Israeli occupation.
However, last Wednesday, the Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club announced Raafat’s death in a joint statement.
They reported that the Israeli occupation failed to disclose details about his condition throughout his detention and prohibited visits from family members or legal representatives. Reports suggest Raafat was initially held in Ramleh prison before being transferred to Assaf Harofeh Hospital, where his death was eventually confirmed.
Rising Death Toll Among Detainees
With Raafat’s passing, the number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023, now stands at 60, according to the Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.
Of these, at least 39 are believed to be from Gaza. Each name represents another life lost amidst allegations of severe torture, deliberate medical neglect, and starvation within Israeli prisons.
A Mother’s Anguish
Speaking with raw emotion, Raafat’s mother described her son as tall, blond, with green eyes—a handsome young man full of life.
“We don’t know how they killed him,” she lamented, accusing Israeli occupation forces of murder. She recounted how the family received updates about Raafat’s well-being through fellow prisoners released under the ceasefire agreement, all of whom assured them he remained in good health.
One particularly poignant message came via a former inmate from Jenin, who conveyed Raafat’s greetings to his family just days before his death. This final communication offered no hint of the tragedy that would soon unfold.
Demands for Justice and Dignity
The grieving mother has called upon Arab and Islamic nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), human rights organizations, and individuals of conscience worldwide to ensure Raafat’s body is returned to his family for burial according to Islamic law.
“My son is a martyr who went to sacrifice for Al-Aqsa,” she declared, emphasizing the need for dignity in his final resting place.
Adding to the family’s anguish is the uncertain fate of Raafat’s brother, Shadi, also detained by Israeli forces. Shadi, a 44-year-old father of seven, suffered a herniated disc during his arrest, yet his current condition remains unknown.
Disturbing images of Shadi lying restrained on a hospital bed, his face swollen and bruised, have emerged online, fueling fears of ongoing torture.
Broader Context: Ceasefire and Obstacles
This latest tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and supported by the United States. While the first phase saw the release of 1,135 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 25 living Israeli captives and eight bodies, negotiations for the second stage have stalled due to resistance from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Critics argue that Netanyahu seeks to extend the first phase indefinitely, avoiding commitments to end the war and withdraw fully from Gaza.
Meanwhile, human rights groups continue to document widespread abuses against Palestinian detainees, including torture, solitary confinement, and denial of medical care.
These practices, combined with the devastating toll of Israel’s genocidal operations in Gaza—leaving over 160,000 dead and countless others displaced—have sparked global outrage and calls for accountability.
As Raafat’s mother pleads for justice and closure, her voice echoes the suffering of countless families across Gaza whose lives have been irrevocably altered by conflict and occupation.
In demanding her son’s body, she seeks not only to honor his memory but to shine a light on the systemic injustices perpetuated behind prison walls.
