DaysofPal- In a strong statement, the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem has condemned U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s support for Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.
Archbishop Atallah Hanna, head of the Sebastia Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church, made his stance clear in a Facebook post, emphasizing that “a true Christian must stand with the oppressed, the suffering, and the afflicted, not with the oppressors who commit violence and repression against nations.”
Hanna’s comments were directed at Rubio’s unwavering backing of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in widespread devastation and loss of life.
The Archbishop criticized “politicians who distort Christianity’s message through positions that contradict the teachings of the Gospel,” stating that such actions represent “an internal enemy targeting the Church from within.”
The post was accompanied by a photo of Rubio with a cross marked on his forehead for Ash Wednesday, a Christian observance of repentance and humility.
Hanna further asserted that those who “take pride in the cross and openly declare their Christianity must also acknowledge the historical injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people and recognize the need to end this oppression so Palestinians can achieve the freedom and peace they deserve.”
The Greek Orthodox Church has long been an advocate for Palestinian rights, frequently speaking out against policies that exacerbate tensions and violence in the region. Hanna’s latest comments reinforce this stance, challenging political figures who, in his view, misrepresent Christian values while endorsing oppressive actions.
In a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Rubio reiterated US support for Israel, saying that help for Tel Aviv is a “top priority” for the Trump administration.
Rubio also said on Saturday that he had signed an agreement to expedite $4 billion in military aid to Israel, which Trump had done at the same time that he reversed terms that former President Joe Biden had placed on the aid.
