Greek Dockworkers Block Shipment of Ammunition to Israel

DayofPal– A determined collective of Greek dockworkers has taken a bold Pro-Palestine stand, halting the loading of a container brimming with 21 tons of ammunition bound for Israel.

This assertive move, made on Friday, comes on the heels of the union’s call to action against the transport of weapons that may contribute to genocide in Gaza.

The container, which made its way to Piraeus port from North Macedonia on Thursday, was set to board a vessel registered in the Marshall Islands.

Yet, the dockworkers intervened, resolutely declaring their refusal to allow the port to serve as a channel for such violence.

Their actions echo a powerful commitment to humanity over complicity, making a significant statement against the backdrop of global conflict.

The union’s Facebook account echoed their resolute message: “We fight for peace… no to Greece’s participation in the war!” Amidst this backdrop, protesters lit flares and spray-painted provocative slogans on the truck, boldly declaring, “Murderers, get out of the port.”

This act of defiance drew the attention of the Greek coast guard, which confirmed that both the truck and container are now under the watchful eye of port authorities as an investigation unfolds.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for the union leader who spearheaded the protest, despite the container having a valid transit permit.

This protest marks yet another chapter in the dockworkers’ ongoing resistance.

Just months earlier, they successfully blocked the cargo ship MSC Altair, which was transporting military materials to Israel.

While Greece has publicly backed Israel amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza, it has simultaneously called for an immediate ceasefire, acknowledging the “unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in the region.
