DaysofPal-The Global Sumud Flotilla represents the third significant attempt in 2025 by international activists to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea, aiming to break the 18-year Israeli blockade.

This mission is notably the largest civilian-led maritime effort to challenge the Israeli blockade, involving dozens of vessels from over 44 countries, including Sweden, Spain, and Tunisia.

The flotilla’s name, “Sumud,” translates to “steadfastness” in Arabic, reflecting the resilience of the Palestinian people. High-profile participants include Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who is also a member of the flotilla’s steering committee, and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau.

Earlier missions in June and July faced interception by Israeli occupation forces as in June, the Madleen ship, carrying 12 activists, including Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan, was seized in international waters.

The crew was detained and later deported by the Israeli occupation forces. In July, the Handala vessel, carrying 21 activists from 10 countries, was intercepted by Israeli forces before reaching Gaza, where the participants were arrested and deported.

The flotilla’s efforts are set against the backdrop of a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The United Nations has declared Gaza a famine zone, with approximately half a million people experiencing catastrophic hunger.

Since the start of the Israeli genocide in October 2023, over 63,000 Palestinians have died, and the region faces widespread displacement and devastation.

Amnesty International condemned the Israeli interception of the Madleen mission, describing it as a “chilling contempt” for international law.

Secretary-General Agnès Callamard emphasized that such actions highlight the international community’s failure to end the suffocating Israeli blockade.

The Global Sumud Flotilla’s mission underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and challenge the ongoing blockade.

The new attempt comes from the Global Sumud Flotilla to break the blockade and famine imposed by the Israeli occupation forces on the residents of Gaza, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of people from hunger, especially children, amid the ongoing Israeli siege and extermination that has continued for more than 695 days.
