DayofPal—More than 1,150 health professionals and healthcare organizations from around the world have signed a petition calling for a boycott of the Israeli Medical Association (IMA), according to a report published by The Lancet.
The campaign, led by the People’s Health Movement (PHM), Doctors for Gaza, and the Health Advisory Council of Jewish Voice for Peace, accuses the IMA of failing to uphold fundamental medical ethics during Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.
Campaign organizers are urging the World Medical Association (WMA) to suspend the IMA, arguing that the organization has remained silent in the face of violations against Palestinian healthcare workers and medical facilities.
According to The Lancet, the petition cites the widespread destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, the killing and detention of Palestinian medical personnel, and reports of torture and abuse in Israeli detention centers as key reasons for the call.
The People’s Health Movement said that at least 1,722 Palestinian healthcare workers have been killed since October 2023.
The group also reported that hospitals, clinics, and ambulances across Gaza have been attacked or destroyed, severely undermining the territory’s ability to provide medical care.
Supporters of the campaign contend that medical organizations have an obligation to defend healthcare workers and uphold international medical ethics, regardless of political circumstances.
