Gaza’s Health Ministry has issued an urgent warning that fuel supplies for hospitals will be exhausted within 48 hours, potentially causing life-saving medical equipment to cease functioning.
In a desperate plea, the Health Ministry stated, “We appeal to all relevant, international, and humanitarian institutions to intervene quickly to bring in the necessary fuel.”
The ministry’s statement underscores the dire situation facing Gaza’s few operational hospitals and health facilities, which are heavily reliant on fuel-powered generators due to the destruction of much of Gaza’s electricity infrastructure by Israeli attacks.
The constant fuel shortages have led to repeated blackouts in hospitals, severely endangering patients’ lives. Without immediate intervention, the looming fuel crisis threatens to plunge Gaza’s healthcare system into further chaos, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has also sounded the alarm, warning that severe shortages of medicine and fuel are hampering life-saving operations. UNRWA emphasized that the safe and sustainable delivery of aid cannot be delayed any longer.
In a previous statement, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that insecurity and Israeli invasion in southern Gaza continue to be major obstacles to humanitarian efforts.
OCHA added that partners supporting healthcare in Gaza warn that power outages due to fuel shortages continue to endanger the lives of critically ill patients, including newborns, dialysis patients, and those in hospital intensive care units.
