Gaza Families Face Silent Displacement Under Advancing Israeli “Yellow Line”

DaysofPal – Ahmed Hamed, a 31-year-old Palestinian journalist, returned to his home in Gaza City shortly after the US-brokered ceasefire. At that time, his house was located about 1.5 kilometers west of the so-called “Yellow Line” established by Israeli forces. Two months later, that distance has shrunk to barely 200 meters.

“Initially, we hesitated to return, fearing for our safety,” Hamed said. “We waited for two weeks after the ceasefire, hoping conditions would stabilize.”

Hamed and his family eventually moved back to their home near Shujaiya in eastern Gaza. But the sense of safety was short-lived. Almost immediately, sounds of bombardment, demolitions, and gunfire returned, often continuing from dusk until dawn.

At first, the family assumed the threats were distant, believing the Yellow Line remained far from their neighborhood. Now, they can see yellow concrete blocks marking the boundary from their own windows, an alarming reminder of the line’s steady westward expansion.
The creeping line of displacement

The Yellow Line, a military boundary unilaterally enforced by Israel inside Gaza, is meant to mark off areas Palestinians cannot access. Since the ceasefire in October, the line has gradually advanced westward, expanding into densely populated residential areas. It now encompasses roughly 53 percent of Gaza’s territory, forcing hundreds of families to flee quietly as homes and neighborhoods fall within its path.

Hamed described the impact of these moves: “People returned to rebuild their homes, setting up generators and reconnecting to the internet. Then, overnight, a yellow concrete block appeared on the street, and families had to escape under fire.”

For some, the advance is sudden and unavoidable. Residents have found themselves trapped in their homes for hours amid heavy shelling, only to discover the boundary had already reached their doorsteps by the time they could leave.

“There is a wave of displacement happening in silence,” Hamed said. “During the war, at least the world was talking about our suffering. Now, these displacements occur quietly, unnoticed by the media and the international community.”

Life under constant threat

Hamed’s home now faces the Yellow Line directly, with Israeli tanks and military vehicles visible from his window. The danger has been deadly: his cousin’s wife, Samar Abu Waked, was killed at the entrance to their home, apparently by a soldier positioned within the Yellow Zone.

“Sometimes, I had to crawl with my wife and children to inner rooms just to survive,” Hamed said. “It feels like fire is moving through our neighborhood, and we’re waiting to see if it reaches us.”

Since October 2023, Hamed has been displaced multiple times. Previously, he packed only essentials, assuming he would return. Now, he fears the possibility of permanent displacement.

As Israeli forces push west, they have employed explosive-laden vehicles to destroy multiple residential buildings in eastern Gaza at once. The aim appears to be clearing areas and preventing residents from returning.

On Sunday, Israel’s army chief, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, described the Yellow Line as a “new border.” Under the ceasefire plan, the line was intended as a temporary withdrawal point, with further retreats envisioned later.

However, Zamir stated that the army continues to maintain “operational control over large parts of Gaza” and will remain along these defensive lines, describing the Yellow Line as a “forward defensive line” and an area of operational activity.

The fragile illusion of a ceasefire

For residents like Reem Mortaja, the displacement cycle continues relentlessly. The 27-year-old was forced from her home for the 11th time last month. Though her family tried to repair damage and rebuild after the ceasefire, they were soon forced to flee again when a yellow concrete block appeared near their house. Days later, her neighborhood was reduced to rubble.

“The world assumes the ceasefire is holding,” Mortaja said. “But every day, we face new advances, airstrikes, and artillery fire. The displacement never ends, and it all happens quietly, without attention.”

For Gaza’s civilians, the so-called ceasefire has done little to halt the displacement, violence, and destruction. Families continue to live in fear as the Yellow Line gradually encroaches, leaving a trail of abandoned homes and shattered lives behind.
