DaysofPal- The spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense, Mahmoud Bassal, warned that 90 percent of the standing buildings across Gaza neighborhoods, especially in the Sheikh Radwan area, northwest of Gaza City, are at risk of collapse.
He said the structures had suffered extensive damage from Israeli bombardment during the offensive and are no longer fit for habitation.
In press statements, Bassal cautioned that the situation poses a grave and immediate threat to the lives of civilians living in the area, urging residents to avoid unsafe buildings where possible.
The polar low-pressure system known as “Byron,” which has battered the Gaza Strip over recent days, has triggered what officials described as a compound humanitarian catastrophe, deepening the suffering of the population already devastated by war and a crippling blockade.
Meanwhile, the Government Media Office reported that more than 250,000 displaced people have been directly affected by the storm, out of approximately 1.5 million internally displaced Palestinians living in tents and makeshift shelters that fail to provide even minimal protection.
The office said these developments reaffirm earlier warnings it had repeatedly issued, exposing the extreme fragility of the displacement environment imposed by Israeli bombardment and forced evacuations.
It added that efforts to address the crisis have been obstructed by the continued closure of crossings and restrictions on the entry of shelter materials.
Based on an initial field assessment, the Government Media Office estimated direct preliminary losses at around $4 million.
It reported that more than 53,000 tents were partially or completely damaged or flooded, alongside the destruction of tarpaulins, plastic coverings, insulation materials, mattresses, blankets, and sleeping supplies. Cooking utensils and basic necessities inside the tents were also damaged, and several emergency shelters collapsed in different districts.
The office stressed that displaced families were among the hardest hit, as displacement centers were transformed into pools of water and mud, worsening already dire living conditions.
