Finland made Wednesday, August 23 a contribution of €2 million to the Palestinian Authority to support the payment of medical referrals to occupied Jerusalem hospitals through the EU Programme of Direct Financial Support to the Palestinian Authority ‘PEGASE mechanism’.
This support will enable the hospitals in occupied Jerusalem to continue providing life-saving medical care to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, said Finland’s ambassador Palestine Päivi Peltokoski.
“Finland remains committed to support high-quality health care for Palestinians from ‘East Jerusalem’, Gaza and the West Bank. Our direct financial support through PEGASE creates stability and alleviates the lives of Palestinian families in need of specialized health services”, added Peltokoski.
These hospitals are a vital part of the Palestinian healthcare system providing specialized medical services that cannot be found elsewhere in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
“The East Jerusalem hospitals are among the few Palestinian institutions still working in the city and provide essential quality health care services that are not available elsewhere in Palestine,” said the European Union Representative Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff.
He added, “Amid the Covid-19 pandemic and its unprecedented implications for the well-being of the Palestinian population, they have played a crucial role as an integral part of the Palestinian health sector.”
Last May, the Palestinian Ministry of Health warned against the ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinian health sector by preventing the entry of required medical equipment to Gaza and denying Palestinian patients with critical conditions from getting medical treatment abroad.
