Extreme Cold Kills Infant in Southern Gaza

DaysofPal – A 27-day-old infant died on Saturday in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip after being exposed to extreme cold, medical sources confirmed.

The infant, identified as Aisha Ayesh al-Agha, succumbed to severe weather conditions amid a lack of adequate shelter and heating. Her death brings the number of children who have died from extreme cold in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the winter season to eight, according to local health sources.

Medical and humanitarian officials warned that the incident underscores the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly for children and displaced families living in makeshift tents that offer little protection from harsh weather. Severe shortages of humanitarian aid, fuel, and heating supplies have left thousands vulnerable as temperatures drop.

Residents across the Strip continue to suffer from a lack of shelter, limited medical care, and acute fuel shortages, while a powerful storm system brings cold, rain, and strong winds.

Heavy rainfall that began early Wednesday flooded tens of thousands of tents housing displaced Palestinians in multiple areas.

In several locations, water levels inside tents exceeded 40 centimeters, destroying personal belongings and leaving families exposed to the cold. The tents, often the only form of shelter for hundreds of thousands of displaced people, were unable to withstand the severe weather conditions.

Displaced families issued urgent appeals to local authorities, the Civil Defense, and the international community, calling for immediate assistance and the provision of temporary housing after losing what little protection they had.

Since October 7, 2013, the Gaza Strip has endured a devastating campaign marked by widespread killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and arrests, carried out by occupying forces with American and European support. These actions have continued despite international appeals and rulings by the International Court of Justice calling for a halt.

According to available figures, the ongoing assault has resulted in more than 241,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, most of them women and children; over 11,000 people were reported missing, and hundreds of thousands were displaced. The crisis has also triggered famine conditions that have claimed many lives, particularly among children, alongside massive destruction that has erased large parts of Gaza’s cities and communities.
