Days of Palestine – Gaza
David Cronin, Irish journalist and activist and author of two books on Palestine, said that when Israel imposed a complete blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007, European Union representatives responded hypocritically during the early stages of the complete blockade on the Gaza Strip.
“A number of EU representatives indicated that this blockade It amounts to collective punishment, and it is undoubtedly an illegal act in contravention of international law,” He added.
This came during the international forum organized by the Days of Palestine Foundation in partnership with the We Are Not Numbers team and the October 16 team under the title (The Siege of Gaza .. An Ongoing Crime), in the presence of many guests at the local and international levels.
Cronin said that one of the most important ways in which the European Union contributed to imposing the complete blockade on the Gaza Strip was that it commissioned the necessary funding to develop monitoring equipment for the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is the goods crossing between Gaza and Israel.
He added that the European Union is implicated in imposing collective punishment on the Gaza Strip by contributing to the preparation of this barrier and its equipment, as the European Union institution would like everyone to believe that it supports the Palestinians in Gaza, and indeed all Palestinians in general.
He stressed that we must not be deceived by what the European Union is showing us. Serious questions must be asked in this context.
He continued that international law obliges Israel to meet the basic needs of the Palestinians who are under Israeli occupation, but despite the European Union describes itself as the largest supporter of the Palestinians, it relieves Israel of its responsibilities imposed on it under the law.
He stated that the representatives of the European Union do not speak on behalf of the peoples of Europe and that Israel’s crimes against humanity are completely rejected throughout the continent of Europe and this is evident in the huge popular protests that were launched against the Israeli attack on Gaza in May.
He added that the Europeans’ solidarity with the Palestinian people is simply evident when they refuse to buy Israeli products when they go shopping every time in the shops.
He concluded by saying, “My friends, I have complete confidence that the strength of the people will help lift the siege on Gaza and put an end to Israel’s corrupt apartheid regime.”
