Muhammad Abu Salamiya, the director of Gaza’s esteemed Shifa Medical Complex, was recently released from Israeli detention Monday, July 1st, 2024.
In a poignant address following his release, Abu Salamiya underscored the dire plight of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, characterizing it as nothing short of tragic.
“What the prisoners endure surpasses any hardship faced by the Palestinian people since the Nakba,” he lamented, alluding to the catastrophic displacement of Palestinians during the establishment of Israel in 1948.
He articulated grave concerns over the inadequate provisions of food and water, coupled with the profound indignities inflicted upon the detainees.
BREAKING: Director of Shifa Complex, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salamiya:
⭕ The occupation deprives all prisoners of their rights and medications.
⭕ Israeli medical teams assault detainees, violating humanitarian standards.
⭕ Prisoners have lost up to 30 kilograms due to food deprivation.
⭕ I was detained from a humanitarian convoy transporting wounded from Shifa Complex via Erez Crossing.
“I was subjected to near-daily torture in Israeli prisons. Our release was unconditional; the Israeli court confirmed no charges against us,” he said.
He added that no international organization visited them in prison; “we were barred from meeting any lawyers.”
Abu Salamiya affirmed a steadfast resolve: “We are determined to rebuild Gaza from the ground up. The Shifa Medical Complex, our sanctuary unjustly seized, shall be restored to its former glory and beyond, by the grace of God.”
