Colombia has approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa’s case against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
In its submission to the court last Friday, Colombia urged the ICJ to guarantee “the safety and, indeed, the very existence of the Palestinian people.”
The document stated, “Colombia is deploying efforts directed at fighting the scourge of genocide and, as a result, making sure Palestinians enjoy their right to exist as a people.”
The Colombian statement further emphasized their primary objective: “to ensure the urgent and fullest possible protection for Palestinians in Gaza, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly.”
The ICJ, the top court of the United Nations, can permit states to intervene in cases and express their opinions.
While several nations, including Ireland, have expressed intentions to intervene in the case, Colombia and Nicaragua are the only ones to have publicly requested so.
Recently, ICJ judges mandated Israel to take immediate and effective measures to guarantee the timely delivery of basic food supplies to Palestinians in Gaza.
In January, the World Court, based in The Hague, directed Israel to avoid any actions that could be categorized under the Genocide Convention and ensure its forces do not commit genocidal acts against Gazan Palestinians.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israel’s offensive has resulted in the deaths of at least 33,091 individuals, predominantly women and children.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced, with humanitarian organizations warning of an imminent famine in the region.
