Council on Internation Relations-Palestine (CIR) has welcomed the approval of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Decolonization of a Palestinian draft resolution requesting the International Court of Justice to issue a legal opinion on the legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
The council said in a statement on Saturday, November 12, 2022, that the committee’s approval gives the Palestinians an incentive to continue their legal battle to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
“If the Court of Justice concludes that this is a continuing illegal occupation, the Israeli occupation will face a serious crisis, and there will be few countries that will stand by it,” it added.
It explained that this would strengthen the position of the neutral countries, and give them a strong reason to stop dealing with the Israeli settlements and oppose the Israeli policy of apartheid, which would strengthen the isolation of the occupation at the international level.
