Amnesty stated on Friday, June 24, that justice remains elusive one year on from the death of Nizar Banat, calling on the Palestinian authority PA to hold accountable those responsible of Banat’s killing.
One year has passed since Palestinian security men have killed the Palestinian activist Nizar Banat after breaking into his house and brutally assaulting and arresting him in Al-Khalil city in the occupied West Bank.
On June 24, 2021, a group of Palestinian security men broke into the house where Nizar Banat, a critic of the authorities’ corruption in Palestine, severely beat him with batons and took him away. He was declared dead an hour later.
With the first anniversary of killing Nizar Banat, the Palestinian Military Attorney temporarily released 14 suspects in Banat`s killing.
Banat’s family and Ghandi Al-Rabi, their lawyer, withdrew from the court sessions on 18 May 2022 after the defense lawyer of the 14 suspects accused a relative of Banat for being a false witness.
According to the Amnesty, Ghandi Al-Rabi said, “We were fighting to bring to justice not only those who committed the horrific act of torturing and murdering Nizar, but also those who gave the order, facilitated, and greenlighted it. Now, we’re set back 10 steps as the accused are on ‘holiday’!”
