Sheikh Najeh Bikirat, deputy director general of the Islamic Awqaf in Jerusalem, has emphasized the importance of retaining the Aqsa Mosque’s gates open to Muslim worshipers to prevent any attempt by the Israeli occupation authority to change the status quo at the holy site.
In press remarks, Sheikh Bikirat called for necessarily preserving the Islamic roots and identity of the Aqsa Mosque through carrying out projects and intensifying the presence of Muslims.
He described the Aqsa Mosque as “the cornerstone of the Palestinian, Arab and Islamic identity” and “the cornerstone of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Palestine.”
He warned that the Israeli occupation seeks to change the Mosque, the Dome and its structure and achieve its dream of building the alleged temple.
In a related context, the Islamic Awqaf Department in Jerusalem decided not to close the Aqsa Mosque after the Israeli occupation authority announced its intent to allow Jewish settlers to desecrate the Islamic holy site during the lockdown weeks as part of intended anti-coronavirus measures.
“After we became aware of the occupation authorities’ intent to open al-Maghariba Gate for settlers to defile the Mosque, we decided to keep the Aqsa doors open [to Muslim worshipers],” the Islamic Awqaf said, urging the Muslim worshipers to frequent the Mosque while observing the health measures.
