Gaza — Israeli military evacuation helicopters were seen landing northeast of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to sources on the ground.
The landing comes just a day after the Israeli troops confirmed that an explosive device wounded two soldiers in the same area — part of the intense battles unfolding across southern Gaza.
While the Israeli military has not officially commented on the purpose of the helicopters, it is widely believed they were deployed either to evacuate wounded soldiers or to support troop redeployment in the area, which continues to witness fierce clashes.
According to The Times of Israel, more than 450 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the ground invasion into Gaza in October 2023, and thousands more have been injured.
These numbers reflect the toll of one of the most prolonged and deadly operations in the region’s recent history.
Heavy Fighting in Gaza’s South
The Israeli ground invasion, launched in late 2023, has seen its most intense combat in southern Gaza, particularly in Khan Younis and Rafah — cities that have become the final refuge for hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians.
Despite repeated Israeli claims of operational control in various areas, the military continues to face strong resistance from Palestinian armed factions. Urban warfare, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and ambushes have made southern Gaza a particularly dangerous theater for Israeli ground troops.
Evacuation helicopters have become a common sight in recent weeks, signaling the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the challenges facing Israeli forces on the ground. Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate under the weight of bombardment, displacement, and siege.
The landings near Khan Younis reflect not only a tactical military move but also the broader human and strategic costs of a war that has yet to show signs of ending.
