Israel bans Muslims’ prayer call in Jerusalem

Israeli authorities banned Muslims’ call to dawn prayer in three mosques in the Jerusalem town of Abu-Dis, sources said on Friday.

Lawyer Bassam Bahr, head of a local committee in Abu-Dis, said that the Israeli occupation forces raided the town just before the dawn prayer on Friday.

The Israeli occupation forces raided Al-Rahman, Al-Taybeh and Al-Jamia mosques in the town, and informed ‘muezzins’ (the men responsible for the call to prayer) that the call for dawn prayer through the loudspeakers was banned.

Bahr said that the Israeli occupation forces did not provide any reason for the ban, and also prevented locals living in the eastern part of the town from reaching Salah Al-Din Mosque for the dawn prayer.

“This is an unjustified ban,” Bahr said, “Israel attacks Palestinians in all aspects of their lives,” pointing out to the “restriction of movement trough checkpoints and through disruption of daily life in the form of nightly detention raids.

The ban came a day after a number of Israeli settlers from the illegal settlement of Pisgat Zeev protested in front of the house of Israeli Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barakat over claimed ‘noise pollution’ caused by the Muslims’ call to prayer.

Palestinian residents in the areas, where the call was banned, said that if the Israeli settlers have a problem with the sound of the call for prayer, they have to leave the holy city and go back where they came from.
