Days of Pal: Since October 7, 2023, 19 Palestinian prisoners from the West Bank and the 1948-occupied territories have been killed in Israeli prisons, according to data released Saturday by the Palestinian Information Center “Mu’ta.” The report attributes the deaths to torture and medical neglect, escalating concerns about severe human rights abuses against detainees.
The findings highlight a sharp increase in violations, with dozens of prisoners from Gaza also reported dead in custody since the start of Israel’s military offensive.
On Friday, two prisoners were confirmed killed: Sheikh Samih Alawi, a prominent Hamas leader from Nablus, and Anwar Sleem from Gaza. Alawi died on November 6, six days after being transferred from Ramle Prison’s clinic to Assaf Harofeh Hospital following a critical decline in health while detained in the Negev Desert Prison.
Sleem was killed on November 14 during a transfer from Negev Prison to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba after his health deteriorated.
These deaths raise the total number of Palestinian prisoners killed in Israeli custody to 280 since 1967, including 43 since October 7.
Human rights groups have condemned the conditions in Israeli prisons, pointing to systemic abuse, including denial of medical care and the use of torture. The recent surge in deaths has sparked international outrage, with calls for accountability growing louder as the conflict continues.
